The man who brought you some of the shittiest skate-related tv shows in history and ran one of our favorite board companies into the ground now has his own city-wide, annual holiday. Cheers LA.
Read the statement Dyrdek’s PR people just posted on his site for more info:
“On February 1st, 2012, the Mayor of Los Angeles unveiled a truly special city-wide, annual holiday, and Dyrdek Day was born. Rob – along with the cast of Fantasy Factory – accepted the tremendous honor in front of a chamber full of city councilmembers and representatives. When he stepped up to the podium he took the whole room by surprise, opening his speech with a simple, resounding… “Dyrdek?”. With every face in the room sufficiently twisted in confusion, Rob elaborated: “Did You Really Do Everything Kind?”. In a single moment, he had managed to graciously accept the city’s praise while turning the mirror on himself. This year – on the 4th Annual Dyrdek Day – the tradition continues. On February 1st, 2015, citizens of Los Angeles will be asked to participate in a 24 hour bonanza of kindness – random, unadulterated, selfless, amazing kindness.
Dyrdek Day is a day to ask yourself… “D.Y.R.D.E.K.?”… It’s a day to honor the most life-affirming, good-to-the-core elements of the City of Los Angeles by shining an enormous beacon of kindness that the rest of the country, scratch that, the rest of the world, can see and join in on. For 24 solid hours, Rob Dyrdek asks you to be good to your neighbors, reach out to your fellow man, selflessly create an opportunity for someone you know well or someone you may never even meet, go out into the world and heap kindness onto everything and everyone you see. Dyrdek Day isn’t just about one man’s journey; it’s about the journey we’re all taking together. It’s about removing the barrier for a day and shedding light on all of the distinct kinds of kind that the world can achieve. Make it shine! At midnight on February 2nd, hopefully we can all reflect on a day where we honestly, amazingly, truly, R.D.E.K. We’ll see you there! #DYRDEKDAY”
