Never Trust a Hippie Jump

Ten of our favourite examples of the humble hippie jump

Eli Reed hippie jumps at the Playboy Mansion of all places

The humble hippie jump; a fun and largely universal trick – given that you don’t even need to be able to ollie in order to do one – and one that gives us some pretty funny slams.

We decided to bring together some of our favourite examples of this timeless trick. Controversially/uncontroversially, depending on how you look at it, we have included some that involve ollies or flips only because they were too sick to leave out. As ever this isn’t meant as an exhaustive list so feel free to chip in with your favourite clips.

1. Tony Cox – IPath Promo

Starting off with one of the steeziest examples courtesy of Mr Tony Cox in the 2005 IPath Promo.

2. Mark Gonzales – Kicked Out of Everywhere

The Gonz with the kickflip Kilty McBagpipe in Real’s 1999 video, Kicked Out of Everywhere. The ollie version he almost landed in Real to Reel is perhaps even better, given that it’s way harder to get your head around kicking away an ollie only to land back on your board again.

3. Eirik Ballo

4. Eli Reed – Love All

Eli Reed chucking himself over a picnic bench the long way, the slams from this are worth your time too.

5. Albert Nyberg – The Sour Solution

Albert Nyberg is no stranger to gnarly awkward tricks, this kickflip hippie jump from the Sour video is a peach.

6. Omar Salazar – Mind Field

Omar Salazar knows how to make a hippie jump look rad, his ender from ‘Nothing But The Truth‘ merits a shoutout here. We, however, opted for these back to back bangers from his ‘Mind Field’ section.

7. Richie Jackson – And Now

Richie Jackson probably has a higher hippie jump count per section than any other skater. Here’s one of the backside 360 variety from his ‘And Now’ section.

8. Gou Miyagi – Overground Broadcasting

Keeping it on a creative tip for a second, here’s Gou Miyagi getting by with a little help from a friend.

9. Jani Peltonen AKA Peka – Guest trick in Sorry

Illusive Finnish skateboarder and former CTRL rider Jani Peltonen pops up in Arto Saari’s ‘Sorry’ section with this nollie heel hippie jump. He also features in Arto’s ‘Really Sorry‘ part, if you want a full Peka section make sure you check out ‘Teens‘.

10. Tom Penny

Ending in style, Tom Penny threads one through the car windows at the Lausanne Grand Prix back in 1996.

Bonus Round: Ali Jusovic

I know this isn’t technically a hippie jump in the strictest sense, but Ali Jusovic is a legend and this is still really gnarly!
