We had expected to catch Ronnie Sandoval in Malmö for the European leg of the Vans Park Series, but unfortunately he was unable to make it. Luckily for us Ronnie was happy to answer some questions via email, so have a read about DIY skateparks, the importance of Channel Street, being turned pro by The Gonz and more.
We didn’t get to catch you out in Malmö this year, how come you couldn’t make it?
I couldn't make it to Malmö because of my passport had expired, so they made me come back home.
Are we going to see you at the Copenhagen Pro?
Yes, of course I'll be in Copenhagen Pro. I honestly look forward to it every year.
You’ve skated Scandinavia before, there’s some pretty incredible skateparks/DIY builds, how do they compare to the parks back home in the States?
You don't compare, you just live in the moment and cherish every minute skateboarding at a DIY park.
"You just live in the moment and cherish every minute skateboarding at a DIY park."
Can you update us on what’s happening with Channel Street right now?
Channel Street is closed down because the city of Los Angeles won't give it back to us. They sleep on what's more important. The more time they take, the more kids we lose to bad activities. It will be open again soon.
Can you explain the importance of Channel Street to you and the San Pedro community?
Channel Street is my life, if it wasn't for that skate park I wouldn't be the man I am today. San Pedro on the other hand is where I'm from, it's not easy living in a place like this. I'm not saying it’s the only place where bad stuff happens, because it happens everywhere. You learn as you grow. Skateboarding saved my life, Channel Street means the world to me.
Any really memorable sessions there?
My memories of the sessions that we had a Channel Street are unforgettable. Every day at Channel Street skate park was a good day, the sessions never stopped.
"Channel Street is my life, if it wasn't for that skate park I wouldn't be the man I am today."
I expect you get asked this all the time, but who has the best inverts?
Always and forever Peter Hewitt.
What are some transition skating no-no’s? Tricks people should stay away from
Honestly, I have a open mind to all skateboarding tricks. There's a reason why they were made.
How’s it been since turning pro for Krooked? Having the Gonz back you in that way must feel special?
It’s a dream come true. Mark Gonzales has always been one of my favorite skateboarders and for me to go pro for his company… I'm still at a loss of words. I can't thank them enough for that day, thank you.
"Mark Gonzales has always been one of my favorite skateboarders and for me to go pro for his company… I'm still at a loss of words"
Why do you think so many skateboarders are into motorbikes? How many do you own now?
The reason why I started getting into bikes is because I've always liked them and it's fun to learn about new things in life. It's like working on a old beat up car, there's a motor, there's a transmission… it's all the same, just different shape and form. I don't like how Andy Roy says, “we're not this, we're not that." I get it, but let everyone do what they want. You never know, later on in life they might become one of the best builders in America.
Any Easy Rider style road trips planned?
Yes, I believe some of my friends and I are planning to go on a trip.
What are you working on the rest of this year?
Skate as much as I can, travel as much a I can, and just skateboard.
