Dream Spottt

Sometimes you stumble across a spot that is beyond belief. I am not talking about a deliberately fashioned skatepark; sculpted to tickle your fancy. What I am referencing here is when the designers of a public space flow you a secret gem, one that those orchestrators may not even understand themselves. We have delved into the magnificent world of the plaza before, so this time round lets look into the wonderful realm of the naturally occurring transition.

There are so many Dan Stuart and Matt Hensley collaborations that stand out from this era (89-92). Not many though are as shrouded with awe as this number. As you can see in the caption they drove 24 hours from SD to Seattle, shot this and returned. Probably a lot more fun to look at than skate though. Hats off!

So we all know that bricks rule, bank to curbs are amazing and street trannies are brilliant. What happens when you combine all three and end up with an undulating transitioned brick quarterpipe to granite curb? Pretty sure you book a trip to Taiwan.

big o

I know you have probably grown up thinking that this is a skatepark, but no… it is a naturally occurring skate spot. This whistle-inspired halfie was formerly located at the entrance to the Montreal Olympic athletics field, but due to development (and the incessant rallying of some key locals) it was moved to a new location. If you haven’t seen Barry Walsh and Marc Tisson skate the Big O, you haven’t lived:

The whole of Barcelona should probably be on this list. I am not going to go on about it being skate heaven, but what I will ask if for you to bow your head at not only this architectural marvel, but would you just look at the form and height on this kickflip by Ali Boulala?

Waveyy Banks

The Loch Ness Monster embodied in pure marble! Sounds like some kind of real estate pitch for a tacky entrance to a garden right?  Well how is it that this place actually exists, it is well beyond folklore these days, in fact you can probably find it in the latest version of the skateboard video game. Still no matter how often you see it, or even references to it at your local park, it is hard to get used to such a skate friendly shape.

I tried to make this list up out of spots that were still in existence, but it was hard to go past the Harlem Banks. I know… then there is the Brooklyn Banks, but there is something about the Harlem Banks that is totally timeless.  They were notoriously hard to skate (both physically and mentally no doubt) and if I had a DeLorean I would key this session with Hensley into the flux capacitor for sure.

I was calling photoshop when I first saw this spot. Might even have been on the cover of Kingpin right? Well it seems to be real as it keeps popping up in the eternally scrolling photo feed. When I mentioned this article to a few friends they asked if I was going to include this one plus it gives a chance to show you this Kieran Reilly shoeless gem.

Still can’t believe this one! This is about as close as you can get to actual sidewalk surfing without getting wet. If I had five spots that I got to skate before my legs give way this would make it for sure. A session here always seems to contain good vibes all round and brings out the secret tranny dog in all of them.

I am pretty sure the skate gods pick a few countries that they prefer to hover over. One of those counties dotted with dream spots is Spain. Look at what happened in this apartment block in Bilbao! I know right? Tastey! Anything on that top bar is serious; let alone an alley oop 5-0 ‘aka’ the Inhabitant. Yeah Silas!

At the foot of one of the world’s most mesmerising, most famous monuments lies a pond full of secrets. Once the world witnessed the scope of the Eiffel Tower ponds in Streets on Fire and Blind’s Video Days, no one dreamt of Paris for it’s labyrinthine avenues or myriad of bars, we simply wished for the ponds to be empty.
