Nike Skateboarding, or simply Nike SB, is a subdivision of the global sportswear giant specialising in skateboarding footwear, clothing and gear, founded in 2002. However, it wasn’t until two years later, with the recruitment of Paul Rodriguez as a brand figurehead, and the release of the Dunk SB, the company’s first shoe designed specifically for skateboarding, that Nike began to make inroads into the lucrative global skate market.
Other early Nike SB riders included Australian Lewis Marnell and Lance Mountain. In 2009, Eric Koston left Lakai Limited Footwear to join Nike, and Flip rider Luan Oliveira was added to the team in 2012. The current Nike SB team features Rodriguez and Koston, and also includes riders such as Shane O’Neill, Sean Malto, Theotis Beasley, Omar Salazar, Stefan Janoski and Alex Olson.
Popular shoes from the current Nike SB catalogue include signature collections from Janoski, Koston and Rodriguez, as well as the Boardfeel, Control and NIKEiD ranges, and the Impact range including the latest version of the Dunk. The brand’s latest shoe is the lightweight Lunar One Shot, endorsed by O’Neill.
Nike SB released its first full-length video Nothing But The Truth in 2007, and it was followed by Debacle, featuring the amateur team, in 2009. In December 2011, SB Chronicles Vol. 1 premiered online, featuring Wieger Van Wageningen, Chet Childress, Daniel Shimizu, Youness Amrani, Grant Taylor and Clarke Hassler. Vol. 2 was published on the internet in mid-June 2013, featuring Daryl Angel, Donovon Piscopo, Justin Brock, Shane O’Neill, and Ishod Wair.
