The Los Angeles-based Matix clothing company was founded in 1998 by Daewon Song and Tim Gavin, pro skateboarders who were tired of their clothes disintegrating upon contact with concrete. All of the company’s garments, which include jeans, pants, jackets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, sweaters and hats, are designed and constructed for durability above all else.

Denim has always been the foundation of the Matix brand, and five different fits are now offered – Gripper, Miner, Constrictor, Nigel and Welder. After problems with early overseas shipments, which led, in the company’s own words, to ‘by far the worst fitting denim we have ever put in the marketplace’, Matix released the Styro with American denim and it soon became a brand favourite, offered in four sizes and two colours.

It wasn’t long before Matix began working with legendary skaters Marc Johnson, Rick McCrank and Daewon Song to create specific fits for each of them, and, in 2001, it released a signature denim collection with the backing of these three heavyweights, including MJ’s slim-line Oblique. Signature denim has since become a staple of the Matix range.

Matix’s team of skate ‘ambassadors’ currently features Song, Johnson, Mike Anderson, Zack Wallin, Auby Taylor and Matt Berger. There is also a ‘visualist’ team, comprised of photographers Brent Boza and Paul Park, and filmmaker Drew Martin. Many of the team have been involved in the four short tour videos that Matix has released over the years, including 2011’s collaboration with DVS, Total Eclipse of the Heartland.
