Since 1999, the Lakai company has created shoes designed for and inspired by skateboarding from its base in Torrance, California. Before creating Lakai, founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard had already experienced success with Girl, the skateboard brand they began in 1993. Lakai remains part of the Girl Skateboard Company family, along with Girl, Chocolate Skateboards, the Royal Skateboard Truck Company and Fourstar Clothing.
Lakai footwear is professionally endorsed by Howard and Carroll, along with Brandon Biebel, Marc Johnson, Guy Mariano, Vincent Alvarez, Nick Jensen, Danny Brady, JB Gillet and Jesus Fernandez, plus ams including Raven Tershy, Stevie Perez, Miles Silvas and Nakel Smith. Former Chocolate rider Scott Johnston has been involved with Lakai since its inception, and is currently the company’s Footwear Design Director.
With a focus on creating an atmosphere that is supportive and motivating for its riders, while at the same time developing a innovative product line, Lakai is highly thought of by many in the skateboarding community. Its current footwear range is divided into six collections – Pro, Team, Series/Limited Edition, Echelon, Kids and an ‘Anchor’ collection available only in a limited number of shops.
Lakai has released a number of well-received films since Beware of the Flare in 2002. The highly anticipated follow up Fully Flared, featuring Anthony Pappalardo and a farewell part from Scott Johnston, was released to critical acclaim in 2007. Videographer and director Ty Evans has been responsible for many of Lakai’s video productions, often working alongside Jackass creator Spike Jonze.
